The newest member of Hope House, Gabriel, 9 years old.
One of my favorite parts of being in charge of our sponsorship program is the one-on-one time with the boys. Whenever its time for new pictures, or updated information, I get to spend some fun time with each of them. I love being silly or helping them pose for the picture while enjoying a moment of laughter with them.
One of the times I get this one-on-one time is whenever a new boy arrives. I normally do an interview with them, depending on their age, and take a few pictures, just getting to know them. This past week, I had the chance to sit down with the newest boy at Hope House, Gabriel. He is such a sweetheart.
As Hope House director, Annel, called him into the office, you could see his nervous face. He didn’t recognize me, and had no idea why I would want to talk with him. I asked if he knew why I was there, he replied, “You're taking me away, right?” I smiled and shared, “Of course not, I’m just here to get to know you better!” He let out a huge sigh of relief and showed me his cute smile! As I began to ask him questions, he became more comfortable with me, he shared some of his story and some of his likes and dislikes, his favorite color, etc.
After I finished my interview with him, I took a few pictures and gave him a big hug. I told him I was so glad that he shared some of his time with me and that I was happy to get to know him. He smiled and replied “I’m glad you didn’t take me away!” I hugged him again.
It was this moment, a moment I hadn't experienced in such a long time, that reminded me of the experiences these young boys have been through. Gabriel must have let out a sigh of relief when he came to Hope House, when he realized that he’d receive not only food and shelter, but love and attention. It must have made him happy knowing I was just another loving face.
Each boy at the Hope House has been through lots of experiences that I may never understand, but I am blessed to know that Hope House will be one of the best experiences for them. The life of love, attention, discipline and joy are things they may not have ever received without us. For all boys like Gabriel, it’s a sigh of relief to be at Hope House.
If you’d like to learn more about Gabriel or even sponsor him or any boy at Hope House, please let us know. We are blessed by everyone praying for the boys and the ministry every day. Thank you for all you do to bring hope to those who have none.
